Nonlocal electrodynamic effects in the optical excitation of the surface plasmon resonance
نویسندگان
چکیده
The possible nonlocal electrodynamic effects on the optical excitation of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at a metal–dielectric interface are studied theoretically adapting the Kretschmann attenuated-total-reflection (ATR) geometry. Calculations of the SPR reflectivity are performed using both the Lindhard–Mermin and the hydrodynamic models for the dielectric response of the metal film. The results are compared with those obtained from the classical Drude model, as well as those from previous study for a bimetallic system. It is concluded that, unlike the bimetallic system, these nonlocal effects are relatively insignificant in the Kretschmann device, except perhaps at cryogenic temperatures when appreciable changes in dip-reflectivity values can take place due to the significance of single-particle excitation. 2003 Elsevier B.V. Fabrication and Characterization of the Fiber Optical Taper for a Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor
For a fiber optical surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor a short part of its cladding should be removed to coat a thin layer of a metal. Usually this is problematic when an optical fiber with small core diameter is used. In this paper, a new method using µliter droplet of the HF acid for short fiber optical taper fabrication is reported. Using this method in a multi-mode optical fiber w...

Surface plasmon resonance sensors have been widely considered due to their sensitivity, accuracy and response speed. In order to stimulate surface plasmons, a crisman structure is used in which the metal layer (mainly gold or silver) is placed on the surface of the prism. Due to temperature changes, various factors such as optical properties of the metal, the prism and the surrounding environme...
متن کاملInfluence of Interface Thermal Resistance on Relaxation Dynamics of Metal-Dielectric Nanocomposite Materials under Ultrafast Pulse Laser Excitation
Nanocomposite materials, including noble metal nanoparticles embedded in a dielectric host medium, are interesting because of their optical properties linked to surface plasmon resonance phenomena. For studding of nonlinear optical properties and/or energy transfer process, these materials may be excited by ultrashort pulse laser with a temporal width varying from some femtoseconds to some hund...
متن کاملThe effect of temperature on optical absorption cross section of bimetallic core-shell nano particles
In this paper, the temperature dependence on optical absorption cross section of the core shell bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) is investigated in quasi static approximation. Temperature dependence of the plasmon resonance is important issue because of recent applications of NPs of noble metal for heat treating of cancer and the computer chips. The effect of temperature on surface plasmon resona...
متن کاملTunable Plasmonic Nanoparticles Based on Prolate Spheroids
Metallic nanoparticles can exhibit very large optical extinction in the visible spectrum due to localized surface plasmon resonance. Spherical plasmonic nanoparticles have been the subject of numerous studies in recent years due to the fact that the scattering response of spheres can be analytically evaluated using Mie theory. However a major disadvantage of metallic spherical nanoparticles is ...
